On Thursday, 5 December, a delegation from the European Parliament headed by President Roberta Metsola met with Speaker of the Sejm Szymon Hołownia, Speaker of the Senate Małgorzata Kidawa-Błońska, leaders of parliamentary clubs, chairs of the Committees for European Affairs and Foreign Affairs of the Sejm and Senate as well as the heads of the Office of the Sejm and the Office of the Senate. President Metsola’s visited Warsaw in connection with the preparations for the Polish Presidency of the Council of the European Union, which will begin on 1 January 2025.

The meeting of the delegations was followed by a briefing in the Sejm by the Speakers of the Sejm and Senate and the President of the European Parliament. “Poland’s priorities for the first six months of 2025 concern security, and not just its

military aspect. The security of our societies, cybersecurity, energy security, food security, health security are all priorities for Poland. Europe faces great challenges,” said Speaker Szymon Hołownia. As he pointed out, we need to restart Europe and make it the most important player in this part of the world. “So that no one has any doubts concerning our potential when it comes to development opportunities, security and growth of our societies and economies,” he added.
Speaker of the Senate Malgorzata Kidawa-Błońska noted that Europe has not been facing such immense challenges since the Cold War. “These days, we keep discussing security and all aspects of it, but we need to keep in mind that there is no security without solidarity. We cannot keep discussing security and the development of Europe without thinking about Ukraine, Georgia, Moldova and Belarus,” she said, expressing hope that the six months of the Polish Presidency would change Europe significantly for the better. “I remain hopeful that the debates and the presidency will not only contribute to the discourse, but also give rise to solutions that will be acceptable for all of Europe,” she concluded.

“In these worrying times, focusing on defence and involving citizens in the decision-making process is crucial. The Polish parliament has proved that it can be done, it is the beating heart of Polish democracy. We have seen how things are done here, we have participated in very frank and open discussions,” the President of the European Parliament pointed out. Roberta Metsola pointed out that “we cannot take democracy for granted.” “We have to fight for it and this is something that all national parliaments and the European Parliament have in common,” said President Metsola.
